(some light reading? dug out these books that I’ve had for well over four years)

I’ve decided to do it. To start my own small business.

Being my own boss and creating my own business is something I’ve wanted to do for a while and even talked about a bit on Chronicled before, but I always tend to talk myself out of it. Some thoughts that always deter me:

+ “I don’t know where to start”
+ “I don’t know anything about owning a business”
+ “It all seems so complicated”
+ “What if it fails”
+ “What if no one cares and I don’t get any clients/customers/interest”
+ “I don’t have any savings put aside to do something like this…and starting a business costs money”
+ “What if I can’t do it”
+ “What if I start and can’t finish”
+ “It all seems so hard/confusing:
+ “What if it sucks”
+  “Other people are doing the same thing/similar thing – what if mine sucks in comparison”

And rest assured there are many more thoughts that can be included but I’ll stop there. Mrs. Positivity, huh?! Have you ever wanted to start your own small business? Have you thought about it? Do these thoughts sound familiar? Man, we have a way of getting in our own heads and just…not doing things, huh. Well no more. I’m gonna do it. I’m gonna try at least.

The past two weeks have been filled with lots of research and lots of emails sent. Lots of note taking and websites bookmarked. Lots of images pinned on a private pin board on pinterest and lots of brainstorming. Lots of mission statement writing and podcasts listened to. It’s been intense. But in a good way. I feel passionate and energized.

I don’t want to say yet too much about what my small business is going to be – but I will say that, being honest, it’s nothing “new” or “unique.” And I think that’s another reason I’ve talked myself out of it in the past – other people are doing something the same/similar. Now, every time that thought pops into my head my response to myself is: “So what? There really aren’t any new or unique ideas left. Everything is being done by someone in some way. That’s what gives us options. Think of one company that is the only company doing/producing/selling that service/product…” And it’s true. What’ll make this different/unique is me; I’m different so, by extension, whatever I create will be different in some way. It’s an idea that sparked when I was living back in India so it’s something that I’ve had in mind for just over 3 years; it’s time to put it in motion and give it a shot, no?

Anyways, I’m thinking of doing a monthly post on what it’s really like to start your own business. Like, what it’s really like. Being totally transparent. I was inspired by a series of post that MixedMade did (you can read it here) about what it’s like to start a business in 30 days (though I’m nowhere near that ambitious!) Their honesty and willingness to share their successes and mistakes was really refreshing to read; there really aren’t any other blog posts that I can find that really talk about starting a small business in such a transparent way (if you know some please leave them in the comments!) Do you all think a series of posts like that would be helpful or interesting?

So that’s where I’m at. At the very, very, beginning. I’m still in the research phase to see if this is feasible for me but my thoughts are “If others can start a business then why not me?” So we’ll see.

More details to come. Slowly.

There have been some questions about This Is Verity and I wanted to take this time to thank all of you who checked it out and read it for your support. It’s something that I still see a need for but the pace of keeping up new content proved to be much tougher than I imagined (considering I also work full-time). I created it to be another space on the web, in addition to this blog, to provide inspiring more focused content. It was never intended to be a business in the sense that I wasn’t planning on going full-time with it and having it be my means of making a living. I have plans to revamp the focus of TIV a bit, simplify, and re-launch it but, being totally honest, it’s something that is being put on the backburner for now so I can focus on other things. I hope you understand.

You’ve got this, and I believe in you. I am looking to more posts recording your process along the way, and what you’re discovering as you go!
